Asahi Glass Co., Ltd. (AGC) and Keio University have jointly developed a plastic optical fiber that has transmission capability of more than 10 Gbps and can be bent sharply with a bend radius of 5mm and is even knottable.

Researchers of IBM Corp. and Central Glass Co., Ltd. have jointly developed a membrane that efficiently makes water drinkable by filtering out arsenic and salt. The membrane also features high resistance to chlorine, which is widely used to sterilize water. Chlorine causes conventional membrane filters to deteriorate.
